Travelling with Mrs. Cupps

A balanced Parisian tourist diet isn’t complete without a baguette in one hand and a double shot of espresso in the other. Add the camera hanging around my neck and I’m ready to photograph every cute cafe I pass en route to the metro.
This stereotype of myself in the city of tourists was painfully accurate. My experience on the trip this past summer lead by Mrs. Cupps was life-changing. This was my first travel out of the country as we flew over the Atlantic to Paris and Switzerland.
The view from atop the Eiffel Tower was a picture I will never delete from my mind. I loved getting out on my own and using my four years of french knowledge to socialize with the Parisian natives. This trip opened up my eyes to having a broader perspective on humanity by showing me that there are whole other cultures out there just waiting to be explored. I also learned the valuable lesson that you have to open yourself up and be ready for a new experience in order to get the most out of it.
There’s good news for those wanting a similar experience next summer. The HHS English teacher, who studied French at Penn State before living in France, just organized a new trip to Ireland and Scotland to be held in 2019. Mrs. Cupps has opened this opportunity up to the entire school to engage everyone in a global learning experience. I’m glad this past trip was in the beginning of summer because I still had the rest to view through the new outlook on life I had.
Everyone had such an amazing time on the trip, but Mrs. Cupps specifically felt the students had such an enriching life experience. Cupps got to see the students learn and grow so much from being exposed to different cultures. She wanted to offer the same experience again to the whole school, not just french students. “The #1 goal for me was to try to draw more students into world travel than normally go.”
One always hears of the French, Spanish, or Chinese trip, but this one being open to the entire school makes it more feasible. There are plenty of other English speaking countries around the world, but Ireland and Scotland specifically are safe places that relate to literature we read here at Hampton. I know that for me personally, I got to explore my already existing love for travel and take it to a new level. It also provided me with the experience to know how to get around foreign places because I know I will be going back to one.
Mrs. Cupps says to students that “If you’re on the fence you just gotta dive in-” to the enriching opportunity by getting out of your comfort zone. “Traveling really builds confidence in who you are. The ability to get around a foreign country and foreign bonds with the people that you’ll travel with too are just priceless.”
This trip would make a great first travel experience because the Passports company makes sure that everything runs smoothly by setting up all the activities for us. Passports is also great for providing a monthly payment system instead of requiring the lump sum up front. See Mrs. Cupps for more information
