In years prior, Toms brand shoes were predominantly seen on younger females and were popular in our own school. Now, there is a changing of the guard with this style.
Toms provide a unique footwear approach for men, and there is no man promoting the trend more than Doug Wright (‘18).
When asked what caused him to fall in love with the slip-on shoes, his response went deeper than expected. He started with, “I grew up always self-conscious and worried about the size and appearance of my feet.” To further his explanation he went on, “After I finally embraced the look of my lower phalanges, I fell in love with Toms because they offer a mystique and stylish appeal.”
However, he didn’t stop there. A frequently asked question is what do these Toms-wearers like so much about them? Doug’s favorite aspect about Toms is the fact you can wear them with bare feet. Clearly, Doug isn’t a fan of wearing socks to school.
The Toms Takeover of Hampton High School is a trend that is seemingly here to stay. Doug is adamant in his belief that Toms are not simply another fad in the fashion world. “Why would you even ask that? You know the answer. Of course they’re gonna stick”, is the fiercely worded reply to if Toms will stay around.

However, not all students are like Doug. A large number of students are not a fan of the look on male feet. Some students will even call out the Toms diehards on their Instagram Accounts.
Doug and others in the “Toms Mafia” take their fair share of criticism for stepping outside fashion norms. “A lotta haters be sayin they feminine and smell bad”, is followed up with “I don’t pay them no mind”.
Another prominent figure in the Toms community is Donovan Braun (‘18). Donovan often uses the phrase “What They Not” when referring to his Toms collection. “When I say that, I am alluding to the Toms Mafia. It’s an exclusive club”, says Donovan.
Between Donovan and Doug, their total comes to 8 pairs of Toms in their collection (5 for Doug, 3 for Donovan).
Doug’s personal favorites are his rusted brown pair. He is a big fan of the color, since “It complements many of my exquisite outfits and is quite snazzy.”
The favorite pair that Donovan owns are his black ones. Whenever Donovan got out of his car in the morning and I made note of his shoes, he said “Black Toms are clean man. I feel like a million bucks when I sport them jawns”.
Not only does Toms make stylish footwear, they have a charitable cause as well. The One for One promise by Toms is their calling card to the limelight of fashion.
By purchasing a pair of Toms from their website, you are helping provide shoes, sight, water, safe birth and bullying prevention services to people in need.
If you didn’t have enough reason already to go out and get a pair of Toms for yourself, the fact that you are directly helping children in third world countries adds even more reason to do so.
The Toms Mafia are avid supporters of this charity. It helps their passion for Toms burn even brighter.
“Ride the wave or be crushed by the tsunami” is a common slogan used by the group. “The Toms Takeover is just starting, so join the bandwagon while there is still room.”
