For the Hampton Marching band, a half time show is never like a box of chocolate. You want to know everything you are gonna get. This year the band picked Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is an amazing movie with many emotions. The story has deep emotion to it and the Hampton High School marching band staff saw that as a great opportunity. Many people will be able to follow what's going and not get lost. The reason behind picking this movie was the compelling story, and there were many rock classics that were in the movie.
With such a great show to be doing the band staff did a lot research but could not find any other marching bands that have done Forrest Gump in the past. So they went on and made up their version of what they should think the show would look like. It took the staff since January all the way up to May working on how the show will sound and look like. In their first meeting they come up with different show and pick one. After that they ask someone to compose the music for the band to play. Mr. Himmler dose hire someone to write out the music for the band and he then adds in the percussion feature. Once that's done they think of how the visual aspect of the show will be. This means, how will the band look on the field once they are all together. When all the
decision making is over and the band has all the music ready to go they get the final number of how many students will be in band. Which this year the band has 185 students, which is less than the past years have had. So at the end of the summer, that's when band camp rolls around. Everyone is meeting new friends and seeing old ones. I asked a band student what his favorite thing about band camp was, he said “ making new friends”. With many other members I asked they mostly say making friends in your section is a great thing about band camp. Since then the band has done a great job. With being done with the show and just adding body is the band is doing wonderful with the show.
In other words the band is at a level that no one thought they could be. With all their hard work, dedication, and the time everyone puts in. It was possible for them to achieve the level they're at. In another way the band has many points of view. There’s the audience the band director, the drum major, and the band members. Each part of the band has a different role. I wanted a drum major's thoughts on how they see and thinks during a band performance, I decided to talk to head drum Major Wyatt Spies. I Asked what he does during the show, his response was “ I worry less on how it looks but keeping together and not falling apart.” With that being said the band would not be together without someone to keep them all in tempo. When school comes around and the football season has started the marching band gets excited. They get to show off the amazing show they have been working on for weeks. When they come out to field now one knows what to expect, but the times we have performed many people have really enjoyed or liked our show. At one of the band competitions, other bands like Norwin have loved what we did with the show and the band got a 71.13. In a few weeks the band got a score at Penn Trafford a 79.58 and came second overall. With all the hard work and with having such a fantastic show the Hampton band really brought Forrest Gump to life and no one knew what to expect of it, and I can't wait to see what comes in the future.
